Centrifugal Influence
In project 2C, the primary focus revolved around designing with influence, emphasizing the importance of identifying references and rationale behind decisions that ultimately contribute to the final design. Situated within the embracing curve of the cliff, the Ibere Camargo Foundation museum site was meticulously planned in relation to its surroundings. Its primary form mirrors the curvature of the cliff it faces. Upon closer examination of the site plans, it became evident that the structural curve significantly impacted the theater room located below ground level.
The theater, strategically positioned at the core of the curve, aligns its walls precisely with the curvature, influencing the overall spatial dynamics. This design choice subtly guides the movement of individuals within the room, directing their gaze towards the exit as they navigate along the wall upon entering the theater. This design philosophy extends to the overall architectural concept of employing obscured views and leveraging curvature and lines of sight to shape movement throughout the space.
Before initiating any iterations, it was imperative to establish a reference point, given the simplicity of the 40x80 feet space. The architecture building emerged as a key reference for the theater, with the stage oriented toward the entrance. This arrangement ensures that presentations on stage project towards both those entering and leaving the building. Additional reference points, such as the drip line around neighboring trees serving as shaded gathering spots, and insights from structures designed by studio mates, influenced the final site design.
Addressing movement influenced by lines of sight, the design incorporated an entrance stair leading to the lower seating level. Descending into the pit, occupants initially lack a clear view of the entire space. Upon reaching the bottom, the entire area is revealed, prompting the viewer's gaze toward the exit – a deliberately obscured view throughout the descent. Curvature plays a crucial role in the design, exemplified by the curved stairs guiding individuals to the floor of the recess, directing them seamlessly to the seating area within the space.
