Convergence
For this project, we were tasked with exploring the idea of the inhabitation of in between spaces and what our interpretation of an in between space is, later applying the results of our research and our interpretation of the concept to the silhouette of 110 Milam overlooking the Houston Bayou. Research on the topic led to the understanding that an In Between space is the connection between two already inhabited or inhabitable places. This can also be called transitional spaces, and these include stairs, walkways, verandas, and most commonly, the corridor. The corridor was the most interesting, not in the sense that it holds any special properties, but its lack of interesting qualities made it the perfect subject to watch how string concept creates complexity.
The overall task of having the end product be a residential space led to the exploration of the idea of inhabiting a corridor as a livable space, a long hallway housing all the amenities for comfortable family living while being constrained to the linearity of the space. This led to the research of different configurations of linear living spaces, all of which exploring a different type of traversal between the individual living spaces.
The overall task of having the end product be an inhabitable space led to the question of how to make a singular linear structure operate in the same way a home does, being that there cannot be designated rooms on the one singular experience. This led me to research ways that separation can be had without tangle means, and the most applicable was the use of breaking the line of sight. One space could be two separate experiences, if one cannot be perceived while experiencing the other.
To be able to move forward and apply this concept to the site, a formula and its elements had to be developed. The two main parts of each system/floor in the building consists of an inhabitable (indicated in black) and a traversal (indicated in stripes) space, eliminating the need for a separate designated stair system. The inhabited spaces are a 10ftX10ft tube. while the walkways have a 74in width (average large staircase width). The combination of the two in different number and different arrangement created unique and very plausible configurations. By connecting each configuration, careful and conscious of their position in relation to the bayou and creating a singular unit all the way up the structure, the process of concept to structure was complete.
